The Lok Sabha on Tuesday approved a motion to extend the deadline for the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill, allowing it to present its findings by the first day of the last week of the Winter Session in 2025.
The motion, moved by PP Chaudhary, Chairman of the panel, sought additional time for the JPC to finalise its report on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024. These bills were introduced in December 2024 and subsequently referred to the Joint Committee for detailed scrutiny.
Meanwhile, Speaker Om Birla also announced the constitution of a three-member panel to investigate allegations against High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma, following a motion for his impeachment signed by 146 MPs. The committee will include Justice Amit Kumar, Justice Maninder Mohan Srivastava, and B.B. Acharya.
The move follows the Supreme Court’s August 7 decision upholding the legality of the in-house inquiry that recommended Justice Varma’s removal after burnt currency was allegedly found at his official residence in Delhi following a fire in March 2025. The apex court dismissed his plea challenging the inquiry process and the recommendation by then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna to initiate impeachment proceedings.
